Narratives
Narratives provide basic country and leader background information and explain the rationale for individual coding decisions. Countries were coded by groups of coders at two different universities. Thus, two sets of narratives, one from each university, exist for each country. These narratives were updated during the process of reconciling coding discrepancies. As a result of these updates, the narratives contain some identical passages to explain final coding decisions. Additionally, many narratives are identical between version 4.0 and version 5.0. More information about the narratives is available in the CHISOLS user's manual.
